ARTS AND CULTURE ARE GOOD HERE
Thousands of artists make the Corvallis area their home. Artists know that
quality of life is a direct link from the psyche to the artistic product.
They live here because this region fuels the soul with its thriving
university community, variety of natural environments from mountains to
beaches, and a major metro area playground to visit just up I-5.
Artists are busy creating in studios atop downtown businesses, community
college cooperative shops and home studios in bucolic settings all over the
valley. And many are a part of the new "traded sector economy" marketing
their paintings, sculpture, crafts outside of the area via galleries, art
fairs, trade shows and via the internet, and bringing their sales dollars
back to the area to spend. A 2003 survey by Oregon Crafted assessing
economic impact of artists in the Benton, Linn, Lane and Lincoln counties
showed that gross sales of artwork are in the millions of dollars, and that
the potential for increased sales growth is there.
There are many creative communities, and many opportunities to participate.
There are seven (7) art guilds that are associated with The Arts Center. Additionally there are
critique groups, reading clubs and performing arts venues, as well as a
myriad of arts classes, workshops and drop-in events around town.
Scratch the skin of almost anyone in town and you'll find an artist:
engineers in rock bands, programmers creating beautiful pottery, scientists
interpreting their work in paintings and prints.
